New Year’s Resolutions: the art of setting yourself up for success and how hypnotherapy can help you in 2025.

Hypnotherapy can help turn your spark of motivation into year-long success.

The start of a new year is a time for optimism and fresh beginnings. For many of us, this means setting resolutions to exercise more, save money, or finally take up that hobby we’ve been putting off. According to YouGov, Britain’s most common resolutions range from improving fitness and diet to spending more time with loved ones and volunteering for good causes.

Britain’s Top Ten Resolutions:

  1. Doing more exercise or improving my fitness

  2. Saving more money

  3. Losing weight

  4. Improving my diet

  5. Spending less time on social media

  6. Pursuing a career ambition

  7. Spending more time with my family

  8. Taking up a new hobby

  9. Decorating or renovating part of my home

  10. Volunteering or doing more charity work

  11. Cutting down on drinking

  12. Giving up smoking

  13. Raising money for a charity

But as positive as our intentions are, the journey isn’t always smooth. In fact, one in five people admit to faltering by January 6th. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. I’m guilty of it myself! But although resolutions can be tough, they’re not impossible.

The problem comes when our ambitions collide with reality. Overly ambitious goals like “I’ll lose 20 pounds in a month” or “I’ll save £1,000 by February” can set us up for frustration. It’s important to remember that success is a journey, not a sprint.

Resolutions are most effective when they’re truly aligned with your deepest desires and needs. In my experience, people succeed when their goals are:

  • Achievable: goals should stretch you but remain realistic.

  • Meaningful: you’re more likely to stick to resolutions that resonate with your core values.

  • Well-planned: having a clear path to your goal makes all the difference.

This is where the concept of SMART goals comes in — making resolutions Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example:

Instead of “I’ll exercise more,” try “I’ll go to a yoga class every Tuesday and Thursday for three months.” Instead of “I’ll save money,” try “I’ll put aside £50 a week by skipping takeaways.”

SMART goals turn vague aspirations into tangible actions.  In fact, SMART goals are at the heart of my hypnotherapy practice. How will you know whether you have succeeded (and how would I know I have helped you?) unless you have a measurable goal? Therapy cannot commence properly without defined goals.

Another important factor is the role of motivation. Abraham Lincoln once said,

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.”

Motivation is the spark that gets us started. Think of motivation as the fuel for your engine. It gets you moving, but consistency and structure keep you on the road. This is where tools like journaling, habit trackers, or even — you know what’s coming — hypnotherapy can help maintain focus and momentum.

Hypnotherapy, for instance, can help uncover what truly matters to you and align your subconscious mind with your goals. It’s not a magic wand, but it can be a very useful tool for reinforcing positive habits and overcoming self-doubt.

Remember, your power to succeed lies within you. With the right mindset and tools, 2025 can be the year you achieve your goals — whether that’s running a marathon, quitting smoking, saving for a holiday, or simply spending more quality time with loved ones.
